CLOUDCROFT, N.M. (AP) - Approximately 100 firefighters and an air tanker are assigned to fight a fire that has burned about 50 acres of forest and grassland near an observatory in southern New Mexico.
The Lincoln National Forest says the fire started Thursday afternoon about 20 miles southwest of Cloudcroft and about three miles west of the Sunspot Observatory.
Forest officials say two structures are threatened but not the observatory, though firefighting efforts are focused on stopping the fire from reaching it.
Personnel assigned to the fire include four Hotshot hand-tool crews as well as ground vehicles and their crews and at least one air tanker based in Alamogordo.
The fire is in the national forest and in New Mexico state forest.
