ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Law enforcement agencies around the state are participating in Saturday's national prescription drug take-back, but New Mexico's most populous county is offering a more permanent option for residents to get rid of their unwanted medications.
Bernalillo County officials say there will be a new medication drop box in Albuquerque's Nob Hill area.
The county has partnered with the Albuquerque Police Department to install the drop box in the police substation along Central Avenue.
County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins says prescription drugs falling into the wrong hands is a serious problem in New Mexico. She says the drop box will give people a convenient way to get medications safely out of their homes.
Drop boxes also have been successful in northern New Mexico in reducing the incidence of prescription drugs being stolen for illegal resale.
