FARMINGTON, N.M. – A 7-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in a crash involving a suspected drunk driver in Farmington on Sunday afternoon.
Farmington police said 32-year-old Mihdi Bathke rear-ended a car carrying four occupants at the intersection of Country Club and East Main Street. The impact of the crash sent the car into another vehicle.
The driver of the car, a 32-year-old man, broke his back in the crash. Three other passengers were also injured, including the 7-year-old boy. Police said the child had to be extracted from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries.
All four of the occupants were transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center, after which the boy was flown to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque.
Witnesses told police that the driver of the truck was speeding before the crash.
Police arrested Bathke and charged him with DUI after the incident. Other charges are pending further investigation.
