Albuquerque firefighters rescued a person from a house fire in northeast Albuquerque early Tuesday.

According to Albuquerque Fire Department spokesperson Melissa Romero, two people woke up just after 5 a.m. to smoke and fire inside their home on the 2700 block of Texas Street NE.

AFD rescued one of the residents while the other was able to escape through the back door of the residence.

Both residents were evaluated by AFD paramedics at the scene for possible smoke inhalation; however, they were not taken to the hospital.

A downed power line fell in the back of the home, creating extra challenges for firefighters at the scene. Firefighters contained the fire around 6:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

"Working smoke alarms reduce the chance of dying in a fire by half. Ensure they are working properly by testing them monthly and changing the batteries twice a year during daylight savings," Romero said.
