Explosions on the fourth of July were expected, but on the fifth of July, some neighbors were surprised to go outside after hearing loud noises to find mailboxes blown up.
"I just looked out the window and there's a whole street of cops standing out there in fatigues and regular police uniforms," Isaac Ortiz said.
Police say someone shoved explosive devices in mailboxes, and then drove away in a white convertible. Police say it is possible that powerful fireworks were used, but police say whatever was used, it was dangerous and things could have ended worse.
"It was big enough to blow up a mailbox so if someone opened it it could have caused serious injury or even death," Albuquerque Police Department Officer Simon Drobik said.
Police say they believe the homes were chosen at random. They have identified a suspect, have interviewed him, and handed him over to authorities.
