Bernalillo County came out to drain some of the deeper puddles along Barcelona Road earlier today and hope that won't be the case come 2020.
"We are looking at in about 4-5 years to put a storm drain that will run down Barcelona and lead to the Isleta drain which should solve a lot of those problems," said Bernalillo County engineer Brad Catanach.
He knows how bad it is now and how much worse it was two decades ago.
"15-20 years ago there was not really any storm drainage infrastructure that was taking care of a lot of these flood problems. We have spent tens of millions of dollars in the last ten years easily on storm drainage infrastructure throughout the South Valley," Catanach said.
Some areas in the South Valley recently had storm drainage improvements, including Isleta Boulevard, Sunset Gardens Road, and Vista Del Rio.
That's all good news, but Bernalillo County knows that the road to full restoration will be a long one.
"There's a significant need of funding throughout the next 10-20 years to solve a lot of these problems," he said.
Those problems not only include the South Valley, but the North Valley and North Albuquerque Acres by Paseo and Tramway have drainage issues as well.
Bernalillo County does odder free sandbags, which you can get at any county fire station. Click here for more info: http://www.bernco.gov/news/216032/
