Two arrested in Wal-Mart robbery and stabbing case

Two people were arrested Wednesday in connection to a Wal-Mart robbery and stabbing that took place on July 22nd.   

Albuquerque Police officers were dispatched to the Walmart at 2701 Carlisle NE in reference to a man shoplifting.

Wal-Mart employee's old police they watched the man stick nearly $700 worth of DVD's into a cooler and the offender walked out of the store, making no attempt to pay for any of the merchandise. 

According to police, One employee, Omar Leyba, approached the male and demanded that stop. Leyba was then attacked by the offender and stabbed several times. 

Police say, employees, Donne DeLong and Sayed Sahibzada, saw the attack and ran to help. Sahibzada received bruises and a broken nose. The employees were able to stop the attack, but the offender fled in a gray SUV. Leyba chased after the vehicle and broke the rear window. 

The female driver refused to stop.

Detectives were able to identify the suspect, as Joaquin Holmes, 31, from surveillance video and discovered the owner the SUV, April Mondragon, 28, was associated with Holmes.  

Detectives located and took Holmes into custody Wednesday.

Holmes was booked on two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated assault, and felony larceny and conspiracy. Mondragon was booked for conspiracy and felony larceny, plus three outstanding warrants.
