Scammers are creating fake rental listings on Craigslist for vacant homes in Albuquerque to dupe unsuspecting renters into sending them money, according to the Albuquerque Police Department's scam of the week advisory.

APD says fraudsters will create secondary postings for vacant homes online. When a potential renter contacts them, the fraudster usually explains he is out of town and unable to meet with them. When an agreement is reached, the scammer will ask for money via Money Gram or Western Union.

It isn't until after the renter attempts to move in that they discover they have been swindled.

APD encourages renters to always meet in person with the homeowner and to never use money transfer sources without first meeting the homeowner.
