Born and raised in Wisconsin, Tom stayed close to home and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. He majored in Journalism with a minor in International Politics.

In his junior year, Tom spent a semester studying at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. In his senior year, he spent a semester as an intern, reporting at WFRV-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Tom was eventually hired full-time at WFRV-TV, where he traveled all over the country and to Nicaragua to report on the war there.

Tom's penchant for adventure and world travel found him and his wife, Pat, selling almost all of their possessions in 1984, and hitting the road. They toured Europe, lived on a Kibbutz in the Golan Heights and eventually settled down in Tel Aviv, Israel, to work on a journalism project for three months.

Upon their return to the United States, Tom was hired as the weekend anchor for WLUK-TV in Green Bay. A year later, he moved to New Mexico and KOB-TV.

During Tom's career as a journalist, he has won several awards. Since coming to Albuquerque, Tom has received numerous First Place New Mexico Associated Press Awards, a first place documentary award from the Albuquerque Press Club, and four First Place awards from the New Mexico Broadcasting Association.

Tom received an Emmy Award for reporting in 1999. In 1997, Tom was honored with two Emmy Awards: one for writing, and another for reporting. In 1996, he was elected into the People's Choice Hall of Fame. In 1994 and 1995, he was chosen Albuquerque's Favorite TV Personality in the People's Choice Awards.

Tom spends a lot of long hours on the job, but he always has time to be with his family. Tom and his wife are the proud parents of two daughters, Ellie and Betsy, and a son, Max. Tom enjoys spending his time away from work traveling, skiing, and mountain climbing.
