Journalism 101: why is this person lying to me? So, for obvious reasons this time of the year, it's a difficult task to sift through the legitimacy of information coming from NFL sources.

But here's what I believe: if the Vikings make a trade to move down, the target is Notre Dame receiver Michael Floyd (Cretin-Derham Hall high school). I don't know feel great suggesting who the pick will be if they stay at No. 3, but my best bet is on USC left tackle Matt Kalil, not LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne or Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon.

According to a source, Floyd had a second meeting with the St. Louis Rams on Thursday.

The NFL is now allowing casinos to be corporate sponsors of individual teams, so look for the Vikings to strike a deal with a local gambling entity in the near future.

------------------------------

Gophers baseball coach John Anderson is a fundraising machine. Earlier this week he secured another large donation -- $1M -- for the new Siebert Field.

-----------------------------

While a contract extension between the University of Minnesota and basketball coach Tubby Smith is still expected to happen, I'm told talks have hit some snags. The belief from one source is the buyout after next year is causing some interesting back-and-forth. Mark Rotenberg, "U" general counsel, is representing the school, while South Carolina attorney Ricky Lefft is representing Smith.

-----------------------------

The University is moving closer to hiring a new athletics director. One person in the know said earlier this week that he believes more than ever that school president Dr. Eric Kaler will hire his guy. So, we can pretend that the 21-person committee and the four person sub-committee are difference-makers, but they're not. Kaler will hire who he is most comfortable with. That very well could be current Stony Brook AD Jim Fiore.

I am told the Red Sox, who lost center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury for two months with a shoulder injury, have had interntal conversations about Twins outfielder Denard Span. But as of now, no actual dialogue has occurred between the two teams.

----------------------------

Luke Hughes tweeted on Thursday afternoon that he's back in Minnesota, waiting out the waiver process. A reminder: the Twins are hoping to sneak him through waivers. They made that move to free up a roster spot for pitcher Jason Marquis. From a couple baseball contacts, the overwhelming thought is the Twins won't win this fight. That some team will claim him.

Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher is scouting playoff teams and potential unrestricted free agents. His two main targets on July 1 will be New Jersey forward Zach Parise and Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter.

---------------------------

If the Wolves end up with Utah's first round pick -- they'll get it if the Jazz make the playoffs, which is looking more likely -- they will be prepared. They scouted college games as if a selection was guaranteed. Among potential targets in the 15-18 range: Iowa State's Royce White, Duke's Austin Rivers, and Washington's Terrence Ross.

Former Gophers linebacker Simoni Lawrence, who is playing for the Edmonton team in the Canadian Football League, is working out with local trainer Bill Welle. Welle has an impressive list of clients, which includes Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald Jr.
