Scoop: Week of 4/26

After agonizing over it for weeks, maybe even alienating my family in the process (wait, sarcasm doesn't translate through the internet), USC left tackle Matt Kalil is who I see the Vikings drafting tonight. What's hard to decipher is whether they will achieve their ultimate goal: moving back a slot, or two, and accumulating an extra pick. Tampa Bay and St. Louis both have an interest in getting to No. 3 for Alabama running back Trent Richardson. But one way, or another, I am all in on thinking Kalil will be a Viking.

A source recently told me to check on a hot tip: that Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith took the LSU job then backed out a few hours later. One high-level "U" official told me the tip is plausible. LSU senior associate athletic director Herb Vincent denies it. Although what good what it do LSU to confirm it? They have a new coach, Johnny Jones, who they should support wholeheartedly. Any trace of this Tubby tip being true could damage the goodwill Jones and LSU currently have. We'll continue to track whether this story has legitimate validity, including making an attempt to get on-the-record comments from Smith.

Norwood Teague, the new director of athletics for the Gophers, met with ex-football players on Tuesday. According to one individual who was present, the chat was "superb." There's apprehension from some football power brokers that Teague's removal from the sport during his six years at Virginia Commonwealth could be a deterrent. But for the most part, those thoughts no longer exist after this gathering. Teague won over the crowd.

Trent Lockett (Hopkins high school) update: after visiting Marquette last week, he's checking out Iowa State this week. He'll graduate from Arizona State next month, so he'll be eligible to play right away wherever he transfers to.

Twins shortstop Jamey Carroll is living in Joe Nathan's former house. Twins outfielder Josh Willingham is living in Jim Thome's former house. As @bennyc50 pointed out via Twitter, neither, thankfully, is living in manager Ron Gardenhire's doghouse.

Now that the Wolves have Utah's pick in June's draft -- expected to be 15th or 16th -- speculation will begin in earnest about what they'll do. Trading it will always be option, but if they draft anyone, Iowa State forward Royce White (DeLaSalle and Hopkins high school) is someone that a scout tells me is "intriguing" to them.
