Obama also says he is pleased Hadi is including women and young people in a transition to fully democratic government.
Obama says he has promised to work with the international community to help Yemen face economic challenges in its transitional period.
The White House says in a statement the two leaders have agreed to cooperate closely to return Yemeni detainees held at Guantanamo Bay. The White House says Hadi has promised to establish an extremist rehabilitation program.
