Long considered a favorite of president of basketball operations David Kahn, the Wolves have not talked trade with Atlanta about forward Josh Smith.

--------------------

According to agent Mike Conley Sr., the Wolves have not called about free-agent center Greg Oden. He has had three microfracture surgeries on his knee, so whether he'll ever be able to play again is in doubt. However, those close to Oden are convinced he'll sit out the 2012-2013 season, rehab hard, then attempt to make a return.

A Twins official volunteered this nugget: trading pitcher Francisco Liriano now then re-signing him in the offseason. Bottom-line: the Twins are expected to move Liriano before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Braves and Yankees scouted Liriano in his last start.

It'll be interesting to see the perks Zach Parise and Ryan Suter have in their contracts. For example, one league source is sure Parise will have access to a downtown St. Paul hotel room, so he won't have to drive all the way back to Orono on home game days after the morning skate. It won't be surprising if Parise has a suite for all home games. Also, expect both guys to have some sort of no-trade clause.

The Wild have had talks about revamping their pro scouting department.

A Gophers football source said right tackle Jimmy Gjere and guard Josh Campion have been given full medical clearance. Both have been battling post-concussion symptoms.

------------------------------------

Gophers quarterback MarQueis Gray, with no nudging from the team's staff, showed up to a recent charity event. It was for a young man who he got to know through visits at Children's Hospital. Gray saw a flyer in the boy's room for the event, and without telling anyone, decided to be there. I'm biased, but Gray is very easy to root for. There are other comparable stories.

According to multiple team sources, the best offensive lineman entering August camp is left tackle Ed Olson Jr. They are thrilled by how he looked in the spring and his leadership during captain's practices. Those practices are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Earlier this week, a "U" official said "not this week" on any sort of Tubby Smith contract extension announcement. That being said, it's still said to be just about done. It will add three years onto the two he currently has. What will be interesting to see is the price of his buyout after this year. Currently it's $1.5 million.

In a conversation after a recent Bill Welle-Larry Fitzgerald Jr. workout, Vikings DE/LB Everson Griffen made it sound like he'll be spending a majority of training camp exclusively at linebacker. He had a lengthy talk with the coaching staff after June's mini-camp.

------------------------------------

Those workouts at the "U" will ramp-up starting on Monday. According to Welle, receivers A.J. Green and Justin Blackmon have committed. Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder is expected to join tight end Kyle Rudolph. Broncos receiver Eric Decker will be in starting on Thursday.
