U.S. deaths reached a record in 2011.
About 2.5 million people died last year, reflecting our growing and aging population. Before last year, the largest number of deaths was 2.47 million, which happened in 2008.
Heart disease and cancer remain the top killers, accounting for nearly half the nation’s deaths.
The Centers for Disease Control’s report that came out overnight also found that the life expectance for a child born in 2011 is 78 years and 8 months. That’s the same as it was in 2010.
