Minnesota is the state of hockey and celebrates the teams that leave it all out on the ice.
About 17 years ago the Mankato West hockey team was one of those teams who left it out on the ice each game, but a player had to leave them because of a case of meningitis that was sweeping the town.
John Janavaras was just a sophomore in high school when he passed. His team somehow managed to pull together and rally behind John’s Legacy and beat the New Ulm Eagles in honor of John in the section final.
KSTP talked to two of the guys who played in the rival game in 1994, and about how they’ll meet again on the ice this year for the first time in 17 years.
’94 Mankato West player Tim Dettuer and ’94 New Ulm player Ty Raitz said it wasn’t hard to get the teams together to have the rematch. Every player on each team except two will be present at the rink Friday and Saturday.
The first game will take place in Mankato at 7 p.m., Friday, in Mankato at the All Season Arena.
The puck will drop for the second game in New Ulm at 7 p.m., Saturday, in the New Ulm Civic Arena.
