St. Paul Police Officer Dan King is at Regions Hospital after he was shot late Tuesday night.

According to the St. Paul Police Department, officers received a report of a theft of a shot gun and compound bow and arrows from a home the 1100 block of Flandrau Street just before 11 p.m.

At 11:30 p.m., Officer King and his partner Officer Brian Wanschura saw a man matching the suspect's description. Police say it appeared to the officers that the man was carrying a long gun. Officers drove into the parking lot of 720 Payne Avenue to investigate.

Police say 22-year-old Chue Xiong from St. Paul raised the gun and fired at the squad car and the officers in that car returned fire, killing Xiong.

A source tells KSTP Officer King was shot through his arm, and that his bulletproof vest likely saved his life.

King had surgery Wednesday morning and is at the hospital in stable condition.
