A 24-year-old California Target employee delivered more than 250,000 signatures to Target Corporate Headquarters Monday, asking the retailer to reconsider opening its stores on Thanksgiving Day.
Casey St.Clair says she's worked at Target for six years, and that she's disappointed in her employer. "I heard Target was opening on Thanksgiving and it made me angry and I wanted them to stop."
St.Clair set up her petition on Change.org and was flooded with support. "I knew there would be some interest out there but I never expected we'd have 350,000 signatures on a petition for it."
Tim Curoe, Target's Vice President of Human Resources, received the petition in the lobby of the company's Minneapolis Headquarters. In a brief statement, Curoe said Target understands working on Thanksgiving requires sacrifice and that the company is grateful to its employees and their families. In the statement, Target says while some employees don't want to work Thanksgiving, there are others who do. "They can pick up additional hours, they're excited about the additional holiday and incentive pay and understand our need to compete."
Target opens at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.
