Minneapolis Fire Station Six responded to 3,800 calls last year making the downtown fire house the busiest in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
This year alone, it is responsible for saving at least six lives while battling fires. And, this Thanksgiving they were back on their rigs waiting for the next call often putting their lives on the line and depending on each other.
Station Six has 56 firefighters, including three women who are stationed there. It is the largest fire station in Minneapolis and covers a very busy part of the city.
They let us spend a good part of Thanksgiving with them behind the scenes. They tell us camaraderie is very important when they live in close quarters for long stretches of time.
Captain Tom Fellegy told us for most of them Station Six is home away from home and if they have to be away from home on a holiday, they don't want to spend it anywhere else.
Just as we were about to sit down and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with them, an alarm went off and they responded to their duty not knowing what was in front of them as they pulled out. Fortunately, it was a minor incident and no one was injured and damage was minimal.
