Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has met with Russia's foreign minister and a U.N. mediator to talk about ways to end the civil war in Syria.
The three-way talks on the sidelines of a human rights conference in Ireland are raising hopes that Washington and Moscow might finally unite behind a strategy for dealing with Syria.
The U.S. and Russia have clashed over how to address the conflict that activists say has killed more than 40,000 people since March 2011.
After the 40-minute meeting, the U.N.'s peace envoy to Syria said there were no "sensational decisions," but the three of them talked about how to work out "a process that will get Syria back from the brink."
He says they agreed to continue working together to "find creative ways of bringing this problem under control."
Earlier today, Clinton and her Russian counterpart met for about 25 minutes. A senior U.S. official says Egypt and North Korea were among the issues they discussed.
