The Minnesota Department of Transportation says living snow fences are working in rural areas to save lives, money, and time during a snow storm like the one this weekend.

Living snow fences are trees, shrubs, and native grasses planted along the roads. The landscaping is designed to trap snow and keep it from blowing and piling up on the roads. They improve driver visibility, reduce accidents, and cut plowing time.

MnDOT officials also say the snow fences help come springtime by controlling soil erosion and reducing spring flooding.
