If the Memphis Grizzlies called the Minnesota Timberwolves about trading forward Rudy Gay, it was a very casual conversation, a league source said on Tuesday.
It's also possible Memphis -- which is shopping Gay -- has yet to engage the Wolves in trade talks. Not that the Wolves don't like Gay, but the source indicated that finding a big man is the more pressing priority.
That's because All-Star Kevin Love could be lost for the season after re-fracturing the third metacarpal bone in his right hand last week.
It's also possible Love's New York City doctor will advise against surgery. But if surgery is necessary, Love will be gone for a minimum of three months, the source said.
The source said there's a far better likelihood than not that some sort of trade happens. The deadline is Feb. 21.
Budinger to see doctor, too
Forward Chase Budinger will see a doctor on Wednesday and will likely be accompanied by president of basketball operations David Kahn.
It's at that point, per the source, that a definitive timetable will be set for his return.
The source said that Budinger is pushing to return sooner than expected. Originally, the idea was he would be out until early March with a knee injury.
Wolves coach Rick Adelman's absence from Tuesday night's game against Atlanta was due to a family emergency, a team source said.
The source added that Adelman is OK. It's unknown if Adelman will be back on the bench Wednesday night in Oklahoma City.
