Police have released the name of the driver who died after crashing into a St. Cloud classroom last Friday.
The victim is 65-year-old George Edward Banks of St. Cloud.
The crash happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4. According to the St. Cloud Police Department, the vehicle was traveling north on Wilson Avenue Southeast when it left the roadway. The vehicle traveled about a block before it crashed into St. Katherine Drexl School on Second Street Southeast.
St. Cloud Police Chief Blair Anderson tells KSTP.com there were no students in the classroom at the time of the crash. Four adults in the classroom were hit by flying debris, but they weren’t injured.
The wall of the school was damaged, so all students and staff were evacuated out of concern over the structural security of the building.
Banks was unconscious and was taken to a St. Cloud hospital where he later died. Investigators believe he had a medical episode before the crash.
