Isanti County Commissioners held a special meeting to vote themselves a pay increase.

The special meeting, held the morning after Christmas, was attended by just one person from the public, 5 Eyewitness News has been told.

The 1.5 percent pay raise amounts to about $400. Critics say it's not the raise that bothers them so much, but rather the timing of the meeting. Besides holding the vote the morning after Christmas, critics say commissioners never discussed a pay raise at prior meetings.

In fact, the 2013 budget was passed a week earlier. Budget documents outlining county expenses make no mention of a pay increase.

Besides voting themselves a raise, the board also voted to maintain its $60 per diem despite prior discussions focused on reducing the amount.

The board's actions have some residents already planning a run for the board prior to the next election.
