A chilly night Thursday on Lake Minnetonka provided valuable training for first responders.

Hennepin County sheriff's deputies and Excelsior firefighters did rescue training on the ice, simulating what would happen if snowmobilers broke through late at night.

Deputies say its important for both departments to train together so a rescue goes as smooth as possible.

The sheriff's office warns even though it's been cold lately, you should never consider the ice safe.

They also recommend wearing a life jacket over your winter gear in case of an emergency.
