COLUMN: Aaron’s Backstage Pass: Red Bull Crashed Ice Kinect Review

In 2001 Red Bull created a sport which is a mixture of speed skating, roller derby and street luge.  It is a very fast and intense sport and athletes from around the world compete in it.

This year the Red Bull Crashed Ice games are going to be in St. Paul, Minn. on Jan. 26 and will feature some amazing athletes.

I have never heard of or saw the Red Bull Crashed Ice games before until I played it on the XBOX 360.

“Red Bull Crashed Ice Kinect” by Bongfish and Microsoft Games, is a very fast and exciting game that will get your heart pumping.  It is only for the XBOX 360 and you play it on the Kinect.

The object of the game is to be the first person to cross the finish line while you are flying down a luge on ice skates. The whole time you are dodging pillars, making sky high jumps, grinding on rails, ducking under obstacles and busting through walls of ice. There are also power ups that you can pick up that will make you go faster.

There are five courses that you can choose to race on. Each course has a qualifying round and your goal is to beat a certain time to advance to the main race. Once you qualify that’s when the fun begins, because then you can race against other computer controlled players or a second player on the course. One course that I really liked was the one which featured St. Paul, Minnesota. You start out at the Cathedral of St. Paul and go through the city.

You can choose your XBOX Live Avatar or you can choose one of the characters that has been already created in the game. As you qualify and win races, you can unlock different helmets, pants and outfits for your character.

The graphics are pretty good. They are nothing spectacular, but they characters look good and the backgrounds are interesting.

The controls are really easy to learn. A screen comes up on the bottom left and shows you what you need to do to control your skater. You pretty much move your arms from side to side to skate. The faster you move your arms, the faster you skate.

To move to the left you lean your body left and to move right you lean your body right. To duck you just crouch down and to jump you, just jump in the air. I was really impressed by how accurate the controls were and I didn’t have any problems with them at all.

It is amazing how much of a workout you get from playing this game. I felt like I was really participating in the games myself. I do have to admit after playing a few courses; I had to take a break.

It is a very short game, but you can go on a leaderboard and see how well you compare to other players. I think that it’s great that you can do this, because I would want to try and see if I could be the number one ranking player at “Red Bull Crashed Ice Kinect.”

I really thought “Red Bull Crashed Ice Kinect” was a lot of fun and it’s a great game to play as a family or with a group of people. This game is really exciting and will get your heart pumping and your adrenaline flowing.
