Rick Kaufman shares with his experiences as the Jefferson County School District communications director during the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999 in Colorado. In 2007, Kaufman became the spokesman and emergency management coordinator for Bloomington Public Schools.

He says Minnesota schools are proactively trying to protect their students from shootings and other security dangers. But their planning won’t prevent every school security incident from occurring. The shooting last month at an elementary in Newtown, Conn., and the latest shooting Tuesday at a Texas community college are evidence of that, he said.
