It's tax season again.
To help taxpayers, the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota has suggested a couple tips to finding a tax preparer this year.
Remember, the IRS says taxpayers are legally responsible for what's on their tax returns - regardless of who prepares them.
Here are a few tips you should know:
-
Get referrals from friends and family when searching for a tax preparer, or visit the Better Business Bureau website.
-
Be weary of tax preparers who offer big refunds.
-
Use a tax preparer with credentials, such as a certified public accountant, a tax attorney, an enrolled agent or a certified E-file provider.
-
Ask your preparer for a tax identification number.
-
Investigate your preparer's history with your state's accountancy board, bar association, or the IRS.
-
Remember that paid tax preparers are required to sign tax returns.
-
Find out how to reach your tax preparer after tax season.
-
Read your tax preparer's contract carefully.
-
Remember you can file your federal taxes for free if your income is $57,000 or less with Free File, available through the IRS.
