The number of vehicles through the ice on Hennepin County lakes is nearing the county record.

There have been 20 reported vehicles through the ice this season in Hennepin County - 18 were on Lake Minnetonka.

The record number of 21 was set in the 2002-03 season. Water Patrol records go back to 1999.

Now, county officials are taking extra steps to keep drivers safe. On Lake Minnetonka you'll notice orange fencing near channels and pressure ridges, places that are not safe to drive.

Authorities will also be out on the lake passing out pamphlets highlighting thin ice dangers.
