A 9-year-old boy is dead and two others were hurt after a shooting in Oakdale Monday night.
According to Washington County jail records, 34-year-old Nhan Lap Tran was arrested on suspicion of murder and assault with a firearm around 6:30 p.m.
Oakdale police say a man was randomly shooting at vehicles around the intersection of 7th Street and Hadley Avenue, which is about two blocks from a Rainbow Foods grocery store.
Oakdale police spokeswoman Michelle Stark says investigators are looking for additional spent gun casings and damage at the crime scene that spans six blocks.
A woman was driving her minivan in the area while the man was shooting. Both of her back tires were blown out, one bullet hit her child, and another bullet hit her.
She pulled into the parking lot of the grocery store, where witnesses say she got out of her van and began screaming for help.
Oakdale Police Chief Bill Sullivan said the mother was wounded in the arm. She has been treated and released from Regions Hospital.
A woman in another car was shot in the hand, Sullivan said.
A gun and ammunition was recovered, according to police.
Meanwhile, a team of counselors is talking to students at Oakdale Elementary, the school attended by they boy who was fatally shot.
District 622 spokeswoman Jennifer McNeil tells KSTP.com building and district social workers, school counselors and psychologists are helping students cope with the loss of their fourth-grade classmate.
McNeil says students are shaken up and "some of the kids are taking it pretty hard."
Police have not yet released the identity of the boy who was fatally shot.
