COLUMN: Aaron’s Backstage Pass: Micro Championship Wrestling

Updated: 02/20/2013 10:30 AM By: Aaron Chalich

I have been a fan of professional wrestling since the early 80’s. It was actually my grandpa that got me interested in it.

Every time I would visit him on Saturday mornings he would be in front of the television watching the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).

I was hooked right away and I was right by his side cheering on larger than life superstars like Hulk Hogan, Curt Henning and Randy Macho Man Savage.
For me the matches were very exciting and I did not miss an episode on television. Every Saturday morning if I wasn’t visiting my grandparents, I would be in front of my television watching the WWF.

After all of the years, I am still a fan of professional wrestling and I try to watch the WWE (was the WWF but they had to change their name to WWE) as often as I can.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to Northern Lights Casino in Walker, MN and attend their Micro Championship Wrestling (MCW) event. This was the first time I had ever seen Micro Championship Wrestling in person and I was very excited.

Micro Championship Wrestling features some of the most athletic micro superstars that have ever entered the ring. They travel all over the United States entertaining wrestling fans with their amazing and unbelievable show.

The first time I saw or heard about Micro Championship Wrestling was on a show called “Hulk Hogan’s Micro Championship Wrestling” that aired on the TruTV network a few years ago. I watched the entire series and I really enjoyed it a lot.

Johnny G is the President of Micro Championship Wrestling and I got the opportunity to talk to him before the show. After talking to Johnny for a few minutes you can really tell that he is passionate about professional wrestling, the wrestlers, and most of all the fans.

I also got the chance to meet and talk to some of the superstars before the show. I was very excited because I had seen everyone on the television reality show and to actually meet them in person was awesome. They were all very friendly and just like Johnny G you could tell right away they loved what they did and they loved to entertain the fans.

The show started and around 6:30pm and lasted two hours. As soon as Johnny G came out to announce the wrestlers, I looked around and there were only a few empty seats. The place was packed and was almost sold out. I really thought that this was great, because there were a ton of wrestling fans that came out to show their support to the MCW.

Johnny G is amazing on the microphone. He had the crowd pumped up and crazy before the first wrestlers came out and that was great to see.

Before the wrestling matches started, Johnny introduced each wrestler that was going to wrestle.  He told us a little bit about them and had the wrestler come to the ring. Then the wrestler got on the microphone and talked to the crowd. The heels were great, because they were making fun of the fans and the fans were booing and yelling things back at them. That was very entertaining. I really liked this a lot, because you learned a little bit about each wrestler.

There were four matches and they were amazing. I had never seen anything like it. Like I said earlier, I have watched professional wrestling for years and seeing the MCW superstars in action was unbelievable. Right before your eyes they were body slamming each other, flying off the ropes, and even going out into the crowd. The fans loved it.

For me the one thing that really made the MCW stand out and was different from any other wrestling even I had ever been to, was that through the whole show, Johnny G did commentary so the audience could hear it. I have been to many WWE shows and other professional wrestling shows and it’s actually kind of boring in a way, because you don’t hear the commentary like you do at home. You get to see an exciting and entertaining match, but there isn’t really any sound other than the fans cheering or the sound of the wrestlers being slammed on the ring.

The first match involved a very exciting handicap match that included Blixx, Huggy Cub, and Meatball.  Blixx and Huggy Cub tried their best to defeat Meatball, but were unable to do it. The match ended with one of the craziest things I have ever seen in professional wrestling and it left the fans speechless and in shock. I can’t say what it was, but I am still in shock and that was the first match. I knew after seeing that I and all of the fans were in for a treat.

The second match was a women’s match that featured Jersey Jess and Starla Love. This was also a very entertaining match and both women are amazing athletes.

I really don’t want to spoil any more of the matches, but the night ended with a battle royal that featured all of the superstars and it was very exciting.

After the event was over, all of the Micro Championship Wrestling superstars took the time to meet with all of the fans to take pictures, sign autographs and to talk with them.

This was great,  because it really shows how much the wrestlers really care about and appreciate all of their fans.

I really had a great time this past weekend at the Micro Championship Wrestling event at Northern Lights Casino in Walker, MN. It was great meeting all of the superstars and watching their amazing athletic abilities in the ring. All of the fans that attended the event had a blast and I did as well.
