One of the first games that I played for the (Nintendo Entertainment System) was a game called “Metal Gear” by KONAMI. I remember seeing the ad in one of the early Nintendo Fun Club magazines and it blew my mind. It was a full page ad and it showed all of the weapons and gear that you have to use in the game.
I could not wait to play it and bought it right away when it was released in 1988. After playing the first level I was hooked and played it over and over again until “Metal Gear: Snakes Revenge was released in 1990.
There have been many “Metal Gear” games released over the years for all of the different systems and I have played pretty much all of them and really enjoyed the series a lot. When I received a review copy of “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” from KONAMI for the PS3, I was very excited and could not wait to play the latest chapter in the “Metal Gear” series.
“Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” takes place four years after “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.” Cybernetic technology is a very important and everyone is trying to be in control of it, because it will make them very powerful. There are many different private military companies now with the collapse of the Patriots system and there are also many rogue military companies that are now leading large criminal organizations.
In “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (MGS: R),” you play as a character named “Raiden who is half man and half machine. Raiden is a cyborg ninja that is equipped with a very unique katana blade that can cut through anything by using high frequency.
Raiden is working for a private military company (PMC) called Maverick Security and at the beginning of the game you are escorting a political figure to a location and you are attacked by another private military company.
They kidnap the political figure and you must go and rescue him. Once you find the location of the political figure the leader of the private military company kills him. Raiden and one of the best soldiers have a huge epic battle and Raiden is critically wounded and left for dead. Raiden is then rescued right before he dies and eventually recovers. Now Raiden wants to find the private military group that was responsible for almost killing him.
I really liked the story a lot and thought that it was very interesting. KONAMI went with a different type of story and I thought it was pretty cool. I liked the fact that there were machines and robots and that you played a ninja that had a weapon that could cut through their metal.
Some people may be disappointed with the story and game because it doesn’t feature Solid Snake who is the main character of the other “Metal Gear” games. I do have to admit that I was a little disappointed myself, but once I read the story and saw the trailer I knew it was going to be amazing no matter if Solid Snake was in it or not.
Kojima Productions and Platinum Games went with a different approach for “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.” They wanted a fast paced action game that was unique and different from the other “Metal Gear” games and I really liked that a lot. There are new characters and a new main character that you get to play as.
“Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” is one of the most amazing games that I have played. It is a fast paced, action packed, non-stop fighting game that will leave you speechless. After playing the first few levels, I had to take a break and say to myself, “What the heck did I just play.” The game play is simply amazing and everything flows so smoothly between the story cut scenes and actual game.
The controls are really easy to learn. Before you play you can choose to play a quick tutorial level before the actual game. There you can learn how to attack and do some of the special moves that Raiden can do. You have two different types of attacks. A light attach and strong attack.
You also have a move called “Ninja Run” and this is amazing. If you push the “R1” button you can run extremely fast and you automatically jump, climb, or slide under obstacles. There is many times where you need to get to a certain area quickly and you can use this mode to do it. You can also use sub weapons that you find on your mission such as rocket launchers and other weapons.
When you are attacking an enemy you can go into something called “Blade Mode” and you go into a special mode where you can repeatedly hit the target with your blade and you can gain energy by doing this. You can also stun enemies by blocking their attack and if you do it just right they will be stunned and you can go up to them and attack them.
There is also a combo system in the game. Being that you can swing your sword really fast you can hit targets and enemies multiple times. To get a big combo you want to try and hit as many things with your sword multiple times without being hit. The bigger the combo the bigger your score will be at the end of the game.
You are ranked at the end of each level, by how many enemies you defeated and by how many points you scored with combos. I really liked the combo system a lot because it makes me want to try and get a better combo each time I play the level.
Another cool feature is that when you are fighting a boss or enemy a button menu will come up at a specific time and you have to push the correct buttons that are highlighted to do a special attack. If you do it correctly the game will go into a short video sequence. This is really important when you are fighting a boss, because the only way to defeat them is by doing a special attack that you normally could not do.
There are times in “Revengeance” where you can sneak up behind unsuspecting soldiers and attack them with your sword and this is called your “Ninja attack.” You actually stick the sword right into them and it’s pretty graphic. You can also do a special attack when you are above them. You can jump down and stick your sword into their head. It’s pretty graphic.
If you get to a location in the game and you do not know where you go, you can push the up arrow on the directional pad and the area you need to go to is highlighted. This is called enhanced AR and I really liked this. I thought that it was very helpful and I know a lot of people will find this useful as well.
You can also talk to other soldiers and members of Maverick Security. If you push the select button a menu will come up and you can select which member you want to talk to and they will give you information about your mission.
As you play the game you can collect orbs and they can be used to upgrade your weapons, armor and special weapons. I thought that this was very cool, because as you advance through the game, the levels and bosses get harder. By being able to upgrade your character makes the levels a little bit easier.
The graphics are amazing and some of the best that I have seen. The characters look fabulous and are very detailed. The bosses are stunning and are unbelievable cool looking. They are huge and every time I looked at them I saw something different that I had not seen before like certain guns that were mounted on them.
The backgrounds were also amazing and very detailed. In the first few levels you play in a city that is blown up and destroyed. There are pieces of debris all over and you have to make your way around it to get to the area you are trying to get to. The whole time you are playing the level you feel like you are really there.
Another really cool thing is that you can slash and cut up everything in the game. Everything that you come across can be cut up and hacked with your sword. This was pretty cool, because you could up to a big pillar and cut it down or if there was a chuck of cement in your way, you can bust it up.
I really thought that KONAMI’s “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance” was amazing and one of the best games that I have played. The story is great and it is a very exciting and action packed game. I feel that “Metal Gear” fans and people new to the series will really enjoy this game a lot. I know that I did.
