COLUMN: Aaron’s Backstage Pass: Scream Factory’s The Nest BLU-RAY/DVD Combo Pack

I just finished watching a movie that made me itch all over and gave me a very uneasy feeling.

Not many movies do that to me but Shout Factory’s “The Nest: Combo Pack” did just that to me.

It has been a while since I’ve seen this film and I kind of forgot about it until I was sent a review copy. I really liked it a lot.

“The Nest” was released in 1987 and was directed by Terence Winkless.  It stars Robert Lansing, Lisa Langlois, Franc Luz and Terri Treas.

“The Nest” is about a town that is being overrun by mutant cockroaches. A company called INTEC was doing experiments on the cockroaches and they eventually mutated into blood thirsty eating machines that will eat anything in their way.

The cockroaches eventually start eating the people on the island and it is up to the town cop, mayor, and an INTEC scientist to try and stop them.

I really thought the story was very entertaining and fun. I thought it was original and also creative.  There have been lots of movies made in the past about killer insects and even worms, but I thought “The Nest” was clever. The movie is about 90 minutes long and the time just flew by. It held my attention the entire time. I must say that the movie is very cheesy, but I loved every minute of it.

There are some really great special effects in “The Nest.”  The cockroaches look creepy and like I said before they made my skin crawl, just by looking at them. There are also a lot of gory scenes, because the cockroaches eat a bunch of people. The special effects do look pretty realistic and I think the crew who worked on them did a great job.

The film quality of “The Nest” looks fabulous. You get a DVD copy and a BLU-RAY copy of the movie.  The BLU-RAY is very sharp and crystal clear. The print looks like it did when it was released in the theater. I was very impressed and I think that was another reason I enjoyed this film so much.

“The Nest” only has one special feature and that’s an amazing audio commentary with director Terence Winkless. It is very informative and he stays right on track with every scene telling us why he shot the scenes the way he did. He also tells many great stories about making “The Nest.”  There is not one dull moment or pause in the commentary. If you do buy this movie, I strongly urge you to watch the movie with the commentary you will not regret it.

Shout Factory impresses me more and more with every one of their new releases in the Scream Factory series. I really enjoyed “The Nest” a lot. The story was great, you get both a BLU-RAY and DVD in the case and the quality of the film is remarkable. Plus the audio commentary is one of the best I’ve listened to in my opinion. If you are a fan of horror films that will make your skin crawl then you should pick up Shout Factory’s “The Nest.”
