Those "Thome Is My Homey"' t-shirts could become popular once again at Target Field.

According to a source close to free-agent designated hitter Jim Thome, there's mutual interest in a reunion.

"There's been conversations off-and-on for a while," manager Ron Gardenhire told KSTP-TV on Monday. "I haven't talked to (general manager) Terry (Ryan) for a while. If something like that happens, wonderful. I love the guy."

A Twins source recently said via text on the subject, "Do you believe everything you hear and read?"

My hypothesis: not everyone in the Twins' front office is on board, but it's a situation worth monitoring as long as Thome's available.

In a recent interview with, Thome said he's only willing to sign a major league contract. In other words, that's where one problem exists. The Twins' 40-man roster is full.

Thome, 42, has 612 career home runs in 22 big-league seasons with seven teams. That includes parts of two seasons with the Twins, who traded him to Cleveland on Aug. 25, 2011.

He split last season between Philadelphia and Baltimore, hitting eight home runs in 163 at-bats.
