Fire Officials: Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow

The recent snowfall has residents digging out, and local fire departments asking to keep the snow cleared from fire hydrants.

Many hydrants have become covered in the white stuff, making them difficult to find and access in an emergency.

Brooklyn Park Fire Chief Ken Pillaman said, "We encourage businesses and homeowners to keep the hydrants clear, otherwise it costs us valuable time when on fire calls. Every minute counts."

Many cities in the metro have "adopt-a-hydrant" programs.

In Brooklyn Park, Chief Pillaman said they have a program with the Elks Club and the local Boy Scouts to keep the hydrants clear.

Check with your local city office to see if there is a program for your neighborhood.
