A 23-year-old man has been accused of assaulting his girlfriend for the third time.

Anoka County deputies were called to the 22000 block of Washington Street Northeast in East Bethel around 8:36 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

The woman said her boyfriend had assaulted her; he was identified as 23-year-old Derek Justin Skajewski.

According to the criminal complaint, the woman said she picked up Skajewski from work the night before and they drove to that location to “drink and party.” They ended up spending the night.

The woman said Skajewski was upset at one point and threw his cell phone, so she picked up his phone and hid it on the couch under a blanket, according to the criminal complaint.

The next morning, Skajewski allegedly started yelling at the victim and asking where his phone was. He allegedly slapped her across the face and then put both hands around her neck and strangled her. Skajewski also allegedly said he would “kill her if his cell phone was damaged” and said, “I don’t care if I have to serve seven years for killing you in a crime of passion.”

The victim said she used a house phone in the garage to call 911 while Skajewski looked for his cell phone.

The woman told police Skajewski has been arrested and convicted of assaulting her twice before. Records show Skajewski was convicted of third degree assault in 2008 and felony domestic assault twice in 2012.

Skajewski has been charged with domestic assault and domestic assault by strangulation. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines on the domestic assault charge and up to three years in prison and $5,000 in fines on the strangulation charge.
