State lawmakers are trying to make adoption more affordable for Minnesota families.

Currently, foster parents get more financial aid than those who choose adoption.

Tuesday, Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson announced "Northstar Care for Children." Under the plan, legal guardians, foster parents and adoptive parents would all get equal benefits.

Gov. Mark Dayton's proposed budget invests more than $2.5 million into the plan.

Funding would go into effect in January 2015.
