More than a million people get their drinking water from a well.
Now the State Health Department says nearly a quarter of private wells could have harmful bacteria in them.
The biggest concern is drinking water for children under six months.
The health department suggests getting the wells tested, because nitrates in the water could be harmful.
"In higher volumes nitrates can be a bigger concern. You don't know what the long term effects are as well if you're consuming it over a long period of time," said Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District Resource Specialist Justin Hanson.
Experts say most contaminated water is still usable for bathing and other household uses.
Most tests run between $20 and $40.
