Several people in Brooklyn Center are out of their homes Sunday morning, after fire heavily damaged an apartment building.

It happened just after midnight at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Camden Avenue North.

When fire crews arrived they saw heavy flames coming from the second and third floor balconies. The fire spread quickly and took over all six units at the Melrose Gates Apartments.

One pet died in the fire, no one else was hurt.

The fire marshal said he doesn't believe any of the smoke alarms in the building gave tenants a warning.

Fire officials say the apartment management paid for hotels for the displaced residents Sunday.

The Red Cross is now helping out those residents.
