A Minnesota bill, sponsored by Sen. Terri Bonoff, DFL-Minnetonka, would award filmmakers production credits that would allow them to recoup up to 25 percent of their costs.
The goal is to make Minnesota more competitive with other states offering incentives to movie makers. Additionally, Bonoff says the movie industry is lucrative and offering incentives could boost the economy.
While the credits could be awarded to independent filmmakers in Minnesota, the intent is to target those who were not originally planning to make movies in Minnesota.
Independent filmmakers in Minnesota say while they support putting Minnesota on Hollywood's map, the credits will not likely benefit the smaller independent filmmakers who are currently making movies in Minnesota.
