PRESS CONFERENCE: Gophers’ Tubby Smith Fired

Updated: 03/25/2013 4:35 PM By: Jennie Olson

University of Minnesota Director of Athletics Norwood Teague announced today that head basketball coach Tubby Smith has been relieved of his coaching duties, effective immediately.

A national search for the 17th men’s head basketball coach in the history of the Golden Gopher program is ongoing.

In six years as coach, Smith finished with a 124-81 overall record, but he was just 46-62 in conference. Smith's teams never finished above .500 in conference, nor did they ever place higher than sixth.

The Gophers made three NCAA tournament appearances under Smith. They beat UCLA this year before losing on Sunday.
