A man was sentenced to 12 years of supervised probation after groping an 11-year-old girl at a Walmart on University Avenue in Fridley.

Twenty-nine-year-old Nathan Jones was convicted of having sexual contact with a girl who was 11 at the time. It happened Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, at 8450 University Ave. N.E.

The assault occurred in an open shopping area, and the child’s mom and older sibling were present. They were in the electronics department at the time, and there were hundreds of people in the store.

The crime was caught on a security video, and footage shows Jones stalking the victim and her family for as long as five minutes as they walk through the store, according to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Commander Paul Sommer, "He kind of swoops in and does the assault. It's particularly disturbing to us because if he is willing to go to these lengths to accomplish this type of crime we're very concerned about what he is capable of in the future."

Jones immediately fled after groping the girl.

Jones must register as a predatory offender and either pay a $1,000 fine or complete 100 hours of community service. He has a criminal history that includes indecent exposure and similar groping incidents.
