Digging in your yard for projects can be dangerous if you don't do it right.

That's why the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul have declared April 'Safe Digging Month.'

The cities have partnered with their local fire departments, Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy.

They are reminding both homeowners and commercial workers to dig with care by calling 811 before you dig.

According to CenterPoint Energy, Minnesotans who call 811 are connected to Gopher State One Call.

GSOC will contact utility companies about the caller's intent to dig, and professional locators will be sent out to the digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines.

Callers are asked to allow at least two working days for the utility lines to be marked.
