Linda Haug goes through some pictures of her friend Elyse Stern. "She had a joy for life," Haug said.
Elyse was killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Lake Street Saturday while riding her bike.
Police say 27-year-old Juan Hernandez-Campoceco was driving. He was arrested a short time later and police say he appeared to have been drinking.
Haug says she had just come back from a business meeting. Being an avid biker herself, she decided to check Twitter.
"Another biker in the community had posted 'Rest In Peace Elyse Mary Stern,' and I knew in my heart it was her."
Linda and Elyse met through a mutual friend. Elyse would eventually work for Linda at Cafe 28. From then on, the friendship blossomed.
"She was a free spirit, an adventurer, definitely an old soul," Haug said.
Haug says cycling was Elyse's passion. It was her way of getting around town with her partner, Tynen. Linda says she keeps looking at her door expecting Elyse to walk through it.
"She was just going to be a constant in everybody's life. Elyse was home. Elyse provided that sense of security for everybody who knew her."
