Charges have been filed in the hit-and-run death of a 28-year-old bicyclist.

Twenty-seven-year-old Juan Ricardo Hernandez-Campoceco of Minneapolis was charged Tuesday with one count of hit-and-run, a felony, and one count of fourth-degree driving while impaired, a misdemeanor, in the death of Elyse Mary Stern.

The incident happened over the weekend near the intersection of Lake Street East and Cedar Avenue South in Minneapolis around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, March 30.

According to the criminal complaint Stern was riding her bike eastbound on Lake Street when she was hit by a green Monte Carlo headed westbound. Police say Stern died almost instantly.

Minutes later and just blocks away, police found Hernandez-Campoceco with two other men in a very heavily damaged car. He admitted to hitting someone on a bike.

Police say Hernandez-Campoceco showed signs of alcohol intoxication. Police arrested him and booked him into the Hennepin County jail for DWI.
