The St. Croix County prosecution said that the father who admitted to killing his three daughters in River Falls, Wis. made a "conscious choice" to make his ex-wife suffer by the killings.

"He fantasized and rehearsed this deed," the prosecution said.

Opening statement ended Tuesday in St. Croix District Court in the insanity trial of a man who admitted last week that he killed his daughters in their River Falls home.

Thirty-five-year-old Aaron Schaffhausen pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree intentional homicide, but he maintains he is not responsible because of a mental illness.
