Even if you're not a sports fan, Friday's announcement is meaningful. Fans, players and media gathered at Williams Arena as Richard Pitino was introduced as the Gophers' new head basketball coach.
This is about more than just basketball. High-profile head coaches often become the face and the voice of the university, and a successful basketball program can be the key to TV deals, alumnae donations and national exposure.
"The University is competing for the best students, the best professors and wants to be as fully funded as possible. Image is important because it goes beyond the sports page," says media analyst John Rash.
Friday, the university basked in the publicity bounce. The story was covered by every outlet from ESPN to USA Today.
