The University of Minnesota is part of a national research project examining epilepsy and pregnant women.
Researchers are trying to better calculate medication doses. The challenge is that pregnant women process medication differently, so finding the right balance is tough.
"The body changes the way it handles medication. Concentrations can drop so much it leaves them at risk of seizure," said Angela Birnbaum from the U's College of Pharmacy.
The study is designed to last five years. During that time, they hope to collect data from 500 different women in 19 states.
