Saint Cloud State University has renamed its hockey arena for legendary coach Herb Brooks.
Brooks helped the hockey team move to Division I, even though he was only head coach there for one season, in the 80's.
Before that he coached the Gophers to three national titles and gold medal for the U.S. men's Olympic hockey team. Brooks died in a car accident in 2003.
The St. Cloud Times says the original plan was to sell naming rights for the renovated arena, which is in the first phase of the nearly $15 million upgrade. Instead, the success of the hockey team in the last season caused university officials to rethink that idea.
Dan Brooks says his father would have been honored to have the building named after him.
