I used to watch a lot of cartoons back in the day and in fact I still do. Growing up I didn’t have cable and the highlight of the week was watching Saturday morning cartoons. I would get up at 6 a.m. and would watch as many different cartoons as I could until about noon when sports came on. This all started at an early age and continued well into almost high school.
One cartoon that I really enjoyed was “Beetlejuice” and it was based on the 1988 film. It aired on ABC from 1989 to 1991 and had a total of 94 episodes.
Now for the first time ever you can get all 94 episodes in one box set from Shout Factory. There are twelve DVD’s in the collection and “Beetlejuice: The Complete Series” will be available on May 28 and is only available from Amazon.com.
I was extremely excited when I received a review copy, because I had no idea that this DVD set was coming out. It has been over twenty years since I’ve seen the cartoon and could not wait to watch it.
The story is about a girl named Lydia Deetz who loves everything dark and macabe who has a best friend that is an undead ghoul named Beetlejuice. Lydia is the only who can see Beetlejuice and they go on adventures in both the real world and the Netherworld where Beetlejuice lives. Beetlejuice can only come into the real world when his name is spoken three times and he can get sent back to the Netherworld the same way.
After all of these years, I still think that “Beetlejuice: The Complete Series” is as entertaining as it was back in the 90s. It’s silly, disgusting, and very fun to watch. You never know what crazy or sick idea Beetlejuice is going to come up with next. In one episode Lydia starts a babysitting service and Beetlejuice does not understand what babysitting is and he thinks that you have to sit on babies so he starts a service in the Netherworld and everything you can imagine goes wrong. Lydia has to once again help Beetlejuice fix the chaotic situation he has created.
I think that “Beetlejuice” is cleverly written and hilarious. It is filled with jokes and very gross humor. I also really like the animation. Everything is very dark and crudely drawn giving the cartoon a dirty and eerie feel. Beetlejuice is a very disgusting character and I think the animators did a great job.
It was really fun and entertaining to go back and watch all of the episodes again. I didn’t realize that there were 94 episodes in “Beetlejuice” and I thought I had seen them all, but there were a bunch of episodes that I didn’t see or forgot about.
I absolutely enjoyed Shout Factory’s “Beetlejuice: The Complete Series” a lot. It brought back a lot of great memories of sitting in front of the TV on Saturday morning and eating a big bowl of sugary cereal. I know that fans of “Beetlejuice” are really going to enjoy this set a lot and people who have never seen it before should also check it out. They will not be disappointed.
I think that it is really great that companies like Shout Factory are bringing back cartoons that we watched as kids in collections like “Beetlejuice,” because it lets people relive their childhood again. It also seems like a lot of cartoons from the past get lost and forgotten about and it is a shame. There are so many amazing cartoons and television shows that need to be brought back and I hope to see more great collections from Shout Factory.
