Two friends found a body Tuesday on the shore of the St. Croix River in Lakeland.
Wheeler Morris and his friend Billy Mork, both age 19, spotted the body at about 11:30 a.m. while cleaning a beach area, behind a house belonging to Morris' father.
Mork saw the body about 30 yards away in the yard next door, Morris said. The men immediately called the police. Officers arrived, as well as the Ramsey County Medical Examiner, to retrieve the body.
"I really didn't know what to think," Wheeler said. "It kind of seemed surreal."
Authorities responded to the 900 block of Quentin Avenue South, where they found the body on the shore, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The body appeared to be in the water for a long period of time and was in a significant state of decomposition.
Deputies were unable to identify the subject on the scene.
The body, which appeared to be a male, was lying face down on the shore, fully clothed, Wheeler said. At first, the men thought the body was a dummy, Wheeler said.
No one has been missing from the area, police told Wheeler.
Washington County authorities continue investigating the incident.
